AZ Domestic Machine Quilting 101

Domestic Machine Quilting 101 - $50

Objective: The objective is to learn domestic quilting and machine double binding by practicing straight-line quilt and basic free motion quilting on 12 in x 12 in quilt sandwiches and binding one to make a cute little mat. 

This class is for the quilter who is ready to learn to domestic quilt on their home sewing machine and  finish their tops on their own. Tops from baby size to full size can be quilting on at home (or domestic) sewing machines!

In this class we will be touching on batting choices and backing. We will go into detail and practice straight line and free motion quilting strategies, machine binding and more; We will be quilting (yay!) and creating a versatile quilted mat! This class will get you ready to finish your quilts on your own!

Intended for adults & teens 14 & older. 

1 session / 3-4 hours

Supply List:
Items you must bring:
Sewing machine
Fabric or very sharp scissors
Straight pins
Machine Quilting Needle 75/11 or Universal Needle 90/14  

Items we will have available to use, but that you should consider purchasing:
Cutting mat
Acrylic ruler - I would suggest an 18 inch x 6  in ruler
Rotary cutter
Ironing board

Optional but encouraged: free motion quilting foot (if you are interested in practicing some free motion quilting.

Quilt sandwich = top, batting, backing

These can be scraps or grab a few fat quarters. We will be using one quilt sandwich to make a versatile mat!

Binding for the mat, you can get a fat quarter for the binding or 6 inches off the bolt (6 in x 42 in strip)

  •           Safety Pins
  •           Cotton thread, preferably of a color that blends in with your fabric square choices and one that stands out so you can see your quilting

Optional:  A small quilt top for our free quilting time at the end of the class!

o   Batting should be at least (can be more) 2 inches larger than your top

o   Backing for your small quilt top. The Backing should be at least (can be more) 2 inches larger than your top

o   Fabric for binding for your small quilt (we will be going over how to make your own binding). If you took Learn to Quilt Level 2, you have the binding and backing listed in your pattern.

If you do not have a machine you can rent one for the class for $10/class

Minimum of 2 students needed for class to be held.  

Full payment is due to secure your spot upon signing up for a class. 100% of a class fee is refundable or transferable to another class if cancellation is done at least 48 hours before class. This allows us to offer your spot to an individual on the waiting list and it insures that our teachers will be compensated for their time. No-shows forfeit any refund or exchange.
